The Oklahoma Academic Standards
establish the following grade-level expectations for
Grammar Mechanics Skills

Pre-K
There are no Pre-K Standards for Grammar Mechanics.
Kindergarten
1. Capitalize the first word of a sentence.
2. Capitalize all proper nouns.
First Grade
1. Capitalize the first word of a sentence and the pronoun "I."
2.Capitalize all proper nouns (John, Sally).
3.Capitalize greetings (Dear Joe).
4.Capitalize months and days of the weeks (December, Monday).
5. Capitalize titles (Dr., Mr., and Mrs.).
6. Capitalize initials of people (A.J. Smith). 
Second Grade
1. Capitalize correctly the first word in a sentence and the pronoun "I." 
2. Capitalize all proper nouns (names of specific people or things, such as Mike, Indian, Jeep).
3. Capitalize greetings (Dear Sir).
4. Capitalize the months and days of the week (January, Monday)
5. Capitalize titles (Dr., Mr., and Mrs.).
6. Capitalize initials of people (A.J. Smith)
Third Grade
1.*Correctly capitalize geographical names, holidays, dates, proper nouns, book titles, titles of
     respect, sentences, and quotations.
2.*Correctly indent at the beginning of each paragraph.
3.*Observe left and right hand margins. 
Fourth Grade
1.*Correctly capitalize the first word of a sentence, the pronoun "I," geographical names, holidays,
     dates, proper nouns, book titles, titles of respect, sentences, and quotations.
2. Capitalize correctly familial relations, proper adjectives, and conventions of letter writing.
3. Indent correctly at the beginning of each paragraph.
4. Observe left and right hand margins. 
Fifth Grade
1. Capitalize correctly proper nouns such as titles of books, magazines, newspapers, stories, titles
     of respect, works of art, regions of the country, political parties, organizations, state colleges
     universities, languages, races, nationalities, and religions.
2. Capitalize correctly proper adjectives.
3. Capitalize correctly conventions of letter writing.
4. Indent beginning lines of paragraphs. 
Sixth Grade
1. Apply the capitalization rules appropriately in writing.
2. Indent paragraphs as needed for specified format. 
Asterisks (*) have been used to identify 3rd- 6th grade standards and objectives that are assessed
at the district level. All other skills may be assessed by the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Tests.
