The Oklahoma Academic Standards
establish the following grade-level expectations for
Handwriting Skills

Pre-K
1. Progresses from using scribbles, shapes, or pictures to represent ideas to using letter-like
     symbols, or writing familiar words such as their own name. 
Kindergarten
1. Print using left to right progression moving from the top to the bottom of the page
2. Begin using upper and lower case letters.
3. Begin printing legibly using correct spacing between letters and words.
4. Trace, copy and generate letters although children may still be reversing some letters.
5. Print his/her first and last name.
First Grade
1. Print legibly and space letters, words, and sentences appropriately.
2. Print using left to right progression moving from the top to the bottom of the page. 
Second Grade
1. Print legibly and space letters, words and sentences appropriately.
2. Print using left to right progression moving from the top to the bottom of the page. 
Third Grade
1.*Use handwriting/penmanship to copy and/or compose text using correct formation of letters.
2.*Use correct spacing of letters and words in manuscript and cursive writing. 
Fourth Grade
1.*Students are expected to demonstrate appropriate, legible cursive handwriting in the writing
     process. 
Fifth Grade
1. Students are expected to demonstrate appropriate, legible handwriting in the writing process. 
Sixth Grade
There are no Sixth Grade Standards for Handwriting.
Asterisks (*) have been used to identify 3rd- 6th grade standards and objectives that are assessed
at the district level. All other skills may be assessed by the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Tests.
